Joseph Elwood Carland was born March 24, 1919 in Broken Bow, Nebraska, and graduated high school in 1938 with high honors and a scholarship to attend the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Agriculture College. He married Ruth Delight Whitney on April 5, 1941. On August 25, 1944 Carland was inducted into the United States Army, and arrived in England on March 7, 1945. Pvt. Joseph Elwood Carland, 26 years old, was killed in action on April 5, 1945 in the vicinity of Marburg, Germany, while his company was under attack. He was identified by his officers and his identification tags.
