Harold F. (Hal) Bowman

Hal Bowman, 88, of Dunsmuir, CA passed away on June 1, 2009. Hal was born April 3, 1921 in San Francisco, CA.

He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1943 with a bachelors degree in forestry. Hal was one of the first registered professional foresters (#20) in California, and we believe that he was the oldest practicing RPF in California. He worked for 35 years as a forester for Castle Creek Lumber Co, Ralph L. Smith Lumber Co, and Kimberly Clark Corp, retiring in 1980 to establish a consulting forestry business which he operated until shortly before his death. Sustainable forestry was not a job, it was a passion.

Hal is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mardell (Packwood), sons Forest and wife Ruth, Brook and wife Maura, and daughter Fawn Turner and husband Jonathan, grandchildren Mark Bowman and wife Jillian, Christopher Bowman and wife Amy, Nathanael Bowman, Christine Bowman, Erich Bowman, Jerry Turner, and Serenity Turner, and great grandchildren Jacob and Muriel.

Hal served in the US Army during WWII, as part of a topographic unit in the Philippines. Hal served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ as a member of the Church of Christ in many capacities, including elder, treasurer, song leader, Bible teacher, music teacher, youth leader, camp cook and counselor for both summer and winter camps, chaperone and transport for youth activities. His first love was for his Lord, and his first priority was to bring his family to know and serve Jesus. Hal was a great example of a Christian father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Hal served his profession and community in many capacities, including USDA Pacific Crest Trail Advisory council, 50 year member of the Society of American Foresters, board member of International Disaster Emergency Services, member of Siskiyou County Planning Commission, City of Dunsmuir treasurer, member of and past president of California Forest Landowners Association, and American Tree Farm System member and inspector. Hal greatly enjoyed vocal music and was a member of the Shasta Chorale, and the College of the Siskiyous Community choir. Hal was an accomplished fisherman and enjoyed spending time fishing, hiking, camping and backpacking with his children and grandchildren. He organized climbs of Mt. Shasta, and annual backpacking trips for church and family groups. Many memorable weeks were spent in wilderness areas from the southern Sierra to the Trinity Alps and Marble Mountains. At age 87, Hal spent a week backpacking in the John Muir wilderness area, walking 10 miles from the camp site to the trailhead because he preferred walking to riding a mule. Hal remained active, involved and interested all his life. His enthusiasm for life was an inspiration to many. A bad fall and series of strokes starting last fall limited and finally ended his life.

A celebration of Hal's life is planned for June 20, 2009 at 2 pm at the Dunsmuir Church of Christ.
