Deposition G
Case of Julia A Bowman, No. 327216

On this 17 day of April, 1888 at Kecks Church, County of Martin, State of Ind before me, _______, a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Eli Andis, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this Special Examination of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says:

I am 64 years of age, a farmer, and my P.O. address is Keck's Church Martin County, Indiana. I lived near neighbors with the client and her husband in 1862 and 63 and ever since and their dependence on their son was for what work the son could do. I didn't know anything about the son sending home money from the army but I heard client's husband speak of Pleasant sending home money but I know nothing about the amount. Client's husband was poorly and could not do steady work himself.

Q What was Mr Bowman's land worth and acre along 1862 or 63?

A Such land as his I suppose was worth about $10 an acre about that time.

Q What other property did he own besides his land?

A I can't recollect he had some stock and had a still that I ran for him.

Q What did the still bring him in the course of a year?

A The way he ran it it did not make him much over his expenses. His income from it was about $500 and then the expenses had to come out of that.

Q Do you know what his income from all sources was in years from 1863?

A No I don't.

Q How did he provide for his family?

A He generally had what they needed . I saw no scarcity . They had enough to eat and wear.

Q About how much of a hand was he able to make himself on average?

A I expect about ½.
