Gun Butt - Isaac Delmar Andis

Home

In August 2011, we received this note via e-mail from a man named Dave Reynolds:

Several years ago my son bought a 12 gauge shotgun at a local gun show.  Under the butt plate is the name Isaac D Andis.  The date is Aug 1, 1905.  Next to this information are the initials S H or J H.  It would be amazing if you knew it was your Isaac's.

Further information on this gun from the current owner:

* The gun is now modified from it's original state. Remember it is altered from it's original state.  It's been shortened to the legal limits of Illinois.

* The gun was purchased in Arcola, Illinois.  There is an annual gun show and sale there.
A dealer of used guns was there with this gun.  I don't remember his name, but I think he is from central Illinois.  I do know he travels around selling and buying arm and accessories.  He has the FFI permit so he can buy across state lines.

* The second set of initials may be of another owner.  This identifing practice was common.  Out of sight but on the gun.
A picture in your link states that Isaac raised dogs.  Dogs then weren't for petting and spoiling- mostly for hunting, hence the gun.

* Volunteer Gun Company; Champion is the model; 12 gauge single shot; serial number 1A681; made by Iver- Johnson for Belknap Hardware Co.  They were located in Louisville, Ky.

We appreciate that Dave found it important to research Isaac's name and assure that this piece of historical value was put into the right hands.  After photographing this gun butt, we sent it on to Isaac's grandson, Darrel Rex Webster.
