He took his training in Albuquerque, NM, on B-29s and saw active duty on the Tinian Islands. Flying 18 missions over Japan, his last “strike” mission was on Aug 10, 1945, the same day that the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. He also piloted one of the planes that flew over the Battleship Missouri on Sept 2, 1945, while Gen Douglas MacArthur was signing the surrender terms with Japan.
