Jacob was 5 feet 10 inches tall with a fair complexion, grey eyes and light hair. He was a farmer when he enlisted at the age of 22. He served as a private in Company E, 66th Regiment of Illinois, Union Army. His regiment was commanded by Colonel S. K. Campbell and his company commander was Caption Levi C. Thornton. He volunteered in Edgar County, Illinois.

While serving with the Union Army, Jacob was wounded twice. He was wounded severely by a musket ball in the calf of his right leg at the Battle of Resaca, Georgia May 9, 1864. Apparently he was treated May 21, 1864 for a "simple flesh wound of left leg and wounds in both legs. The second musket ball was not removed. He was furloughed August 15, 1864 because of his injuries.

Jacob apparently served as a guard for the C&GE to Chattanooga, Tennessee from November 8, 1864 until January 1865 when he was again given leave. While in the army he also suffered sunstroke and dysentery. It was the latter which caused him to apply for a pension some years later. He was mustered out June 2, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky by reason of the expiration of his term of service.
