Deposition D
Case of Julia A Bowman, No. 327216

On this 17 day of April, 1888 at Kecks Church, County of Martin, State of Ind before me, _______, a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared John G Toon, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this Special Examination of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says:

I am 52 years of age, a farmer, and my P.O. address is Keck's Church Martin County, Indiana. I have known client and her husband as long as I can recollect.

Q What were the financial circumstances of client's husband in 1863?

A It was considered pretty good in this country. He had a good deal of stock and some pretty good stock. I don't know just what he was worth but he had about 400 acres of land and it was worth $12 an acre the whole of it.

Q How did he provide for his family?

A As well as any body did in this country. They always had plenty.

Q How was his health then?

A It was bad along about that time. I don't know what was the matter but he complained of his back. I know he could not do much in a log rolling.

Q How much of the time was he disabled by his back?

A About all the time for several years along then. He would go around and oversee and direct the work.

Q How has he got along financially since?

A I don't know.

Q Has he always provided and cared for his family?

A Yes I recon.

Q What did his son Pleasant do?

A He worked on the farm like other boys in the neighborhood.

Q Do you know of his sending any money from the army?

A I don't know, several of the boys sent money home ________ can but I don't think Pleasant ever sent any that I know.

Q Was Pleasant's work or any money he may have sent home in any way necessary for the comfortable living of his mother?

A I think it was it helped clothe her and find her something to eat and support her.

Q Didn't her husband support her, clothe her and find her something to eat and couldn't he and didn't he do as well by her without Pleasant's help?

A I don't think her could as well as with Pleasant's help.

Q Did she live as well and be clothes as well after Pleasant's death as before?

A I could not answer that exactly but I don't suspect she did _________ though.

Q Was client's husband close and miserly or did he prefer his money for liquor or on himself or did he support and care for his family as a man should. Was he a good provider or not?

A He has always been called stingy and close, I suppose he provided as well for his family as a man in his circumstances ought to. They always had plenty to eat and wear, but he was too close to spend his money drinking or waste in on himself.

Q Has he always taken proper care for his wife and provided her a comfortable house and plenty to eat ______?

A Yes
