Case of Julia A Bowman, No. 327216

On this 17 day of April, 1888 at Kecks Church, County of Martin, State of Ind before me, _______, a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Joseph Williams, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this Special Examination of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says:

I am 50 years of age, a farmer, and my P.O. address is Keck's Church Martin County, Indiana. I have been acquainted and live near neighbor with client and her husband as long as I can remember.

Q What were his circumstances at the time their son Pleasant died January 1863?

A That has been about 25 years ago and it is hard to recollect. As far as I recollect he was in a fair shape financial at that time but has not in quite so good circumstances since but I can not say just where he commenced to go back financially but I would think about 15 years ago.

Q What did the son Pleasant do?

A He worked on the farm the same as other boys in the neighborhood.. I don't know that he was any different from other boys. I don't know anything about his sending any money home from the army.

Q Was his work or help in any way necessary to the comfortable support of the client in 1863.

A Well he was the oldest boy and he done what he could on the farm.

Q How did they live after Pleasant died?

A I could not tell I recon the same as before.

Q How was the health of clients husband?

A I don't recollect how it was in 1860. I know he has been poorly for several years with some chronic trouble with his spine.

Q How much did that interfere with his work?

A He has not been able to do any thing for several years that is work like other people.

Q Have you testified in this case before?

A Yes that is my signature.

Q Do you know how he provided and cared for his family during the war?

A He did as well as he could and as well as anyone in this part of the country.

Q Wasn't he considered pretty well fixed in those times?

A Just common.

Q Do you know how much he was worth then?

A I don't know.

Q Do you know about how much he made in a year from his labor, his farm, his produce and other ways?

A No I don't know since times he made a little surplus and other times only enough to do him.

Q Was Pleasant ever married?

A No sir.

Q Are you related or interested?

A No sir.
