It is a case of good news and bad news for the 2010 Linton-Stockton High School girls golf team, who begin the season Thursday at the 18-hole Lady Mustang Invitational at Cascades Golf Course in Bloomington.
The good news is that second-year coach Chaz Hendrix has three returning lettermen and the bad news is there are no other girls participating for the Lady Miners. Four golfers are needed to compile a team score.
"I was hoping to have enough girls to put up a team score," said Hendrix. "But if we only have three, it is good that they are all returning with experience.

"I was anticipating having five girls, but one decided to work and the other one wanted to concentrate on her grades. Next year we hope to have three girls from junior high joining us."

Senior Ashley Tibbett, who had a nine-hole low score of 50 last year, returns after having her 2009 season cut short with a torn Achilles tendon. She also is recovering from an injured ankle during basketball season."We are hoping that Ashley can get back to 100 percent," said Hendrix.

Sophomore Katie Wells is another player that earned a varsity letter in golf a year ago. "I believe that Katie was low for us last year," said Hendrix.

Darcy Andis, sophomore, was on the roster a year ago and played in the sectional for the Lady Miners. "Darcy is another young golfer with some experience," said Hendrix.

He said one of his goals is for the girls to show improvement from last season. "I would think we could shoot about 155 for nine holes," said Hendrix. "That would be a good team score for us. "These girls are capable of shooting about 50 for nine holes, if not under that."

He added they have been working a lot on their chipping and putting. "The girls have to stay focused," Hendrix said. "That will be a big part of how well they do. They cannot get too down on themselves when they have a bad hole. "The best way to save strokes is with the short game. If we can get up and down, that is a way to avoid those big numbers." The Lady Miners will play at the Washington Invitational Friday and then play Tuesday at the Terre Haute South Invitational. "We play some pretty good competition," said Hendrix. "Washington went all the way to the state last year and return a lot of players from that team. "South always has a great team. We play them a couple of times." Hendrix said it is a quick season as 1/4th of their schedule will be over by the time school starts. "It is good for us to open with the three 18-hole invitationals before school starts," he said. "That way golf won't interfere with their school work."...This is a fun group to be around. They work hard and they have a good time. I am really looking forward to the season."
