Birg B. Sergent , 92, Jonesville, Va.

JONESVILLE, Va. - Birg Bascom Sergent , 92, died Thursday (April 17, 2003) at Claiborne County Hospital and Nursing Home, Tazewell, Tenn.

Born in Lee County, Va. on June 20, 1910, he had been a resident of Lee County his entire life. He was a retired merchant, carpenter and miner.

He was a member of the Camp Ground United Methodist Church, Jonesville, Va., and was a lay speaker, Sunday School teacher and held many other positions.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Wilburn Sergent ; parents, Ben F. Sergent I and Minnie Kate Blakemore Sergent ; four sisters, Mary Carroll, Lillie Matlock, Nannie Speak and Maggie Sergent ; and three brothers, Melvin Sergent , Wilburn Sergent and Ben F. Sergent II.

Surviving are his wife, Willie O. Neff Sergent , of the home; son, Birg E. Sergent and wife Lana of Pennington Gap, Va.; daughters, Sue Beaty and husband Sam of Ewing, Ann Miller and husband Gerald of Germantown, Ohio and Nancy Jeter and husband Iver of Kingston, Tenn.; grandchildren, Mindy and Derek Jeter, Monica McElyea and husband Jeff and Tonya Rice and husband Ryan; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Province Funeral Home in Jonesville, Va.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home sanctuary with the Rev. Bobby Dunford officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lee Memorial Gardens, Woodway, Va. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 2 p.m. to go to the cemetery.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.
