Obituary - Charles Luther Townsend

BRISTOL, Va. 

Mr. Charlie Townsend, age 88, a resident of the Smith Creek section of Washington County, Va., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, at his residence.

He was the son of the late John and Nettie Townsend and was preceded in death by his son, Walter Malcolm Townsend, and his brothers and sisters, Mary Canter, Margaret Worley, Dora Miller, Bill Townsend, Glen Townsend and Claude Townsend.

He was a veteran of World War II, and he served in the U.S. Army, where he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a lifelong farmer and had worked as a supervisor for Cozart Warehouse for many years. He was a member of the Valley View Church.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Maxie Townsend of Bristol Virginia; one daughter, Doris Caldwell and husband Bill of Rural Retreat, Va.; three sons, Dennis Townsend and wife Betty of Panama City, Fla., Kenneth Townsend and wife Wilma of Abingdon, Va,, and David Allen Townsend of Bristol Virginia; two sisters, Lula Church and husband Tracey and Callie Rowe, all of Johnson City, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Military graveside services for Mr. Charlie Townsend will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, in The Forest Hills Memory Gardens, with Pastor Kenneth Widner officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard.

Active pallbearers will be Jim Townsend, Pat Kuss, Todd Caldwell, E.J. Dunford, Derick Caldwell and Ty Caldwell. Honorary pallbearers will be G.H. Andis, Earl Cox, Jim Cozart, Michael Cozart and Edward Cozart.

The family will receive friends at the Frost Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and may call at the home at any time.

The family would like to thank the Hospice House of Bristol Tennessee for their care and compassion.
