George Robert "Bob" Bowers, 58, who retired as a professor at Tallahassee Community College, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, from cancer. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Bowers. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. EST Wednesday at Fellowship Presbyterian Church on Shamrock South. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. EST today at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Riggins Road Chapel (850-877-8191).

Monroe St., Tallahassee, FL 32301, or the American Cancer Society's Winn Dixie Hope Lodge, 2121 SW 16th St., Gainesville, FL 32608, or call (800) 227-2345. Bob was a Navy corpsman. He received his bachelor's degree at Slippery Rock University, a master's degree in public health at Tulane University and a Ph.D. from Florida State University. He worked for the Department of Health's emergency medical services as the director of child and maternal health and as the director of family planning before teaching at TCC. Bob's interests included scuba diving and woodworking. He volunteered as a scuba instructor through the YMCA at the national and local levels. 

His community contributions included involvement in local swimming programs including YMCA, city and high-school teams. Survivors include his parents, George and Helen Bowers; a sister, Lyn Hill; a brother, Mark Bowers; two daughters, Stacy Bowers Merickel (and husband Andrew) of San Francisco and Laurie Bowers Berson (and husband Daniel) of Austin, Texas; and three grandchildren, Lucy Merickel, Ava Merickel and Mazzi Berson.
