Jones, Jack

Jack Edward Jones, age 77, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn., of complications from Myelodysplastic Syndrome type (RAEB-t).

He was born in Johnson City, July 23, 1929, to Lawrence "Bo" and Elizabeth Pendleton Jones. He resided in Johnson City all his life except 1951-1955, when he served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Jack often spoke of his many travels with the military and was proud of his service time.

Jack graduated from Science Hill High School in 1948 and East Tennessee State College in 1957. He enjoyed the fellowship of the men's Sunday school class and services at Sinking Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member. His membership in the Watauga Valley Chapter of NRHS enabled him to participate in many train excursions. Learning, watching, and riding trains was a lifetime hobby for Jack. He and his son spent countless, happy hours watching trains roll by and noting the many changes in the engines.

After graduating from college, Jack worked many years for Marion Carr as probate clerk of Washington County and Red Hartman as deputy clerk in the Registrar of Deeds office. His next work assignment was preparing labs for students in the chemistry department at ETSU. Lasting friendships were formed in all these work experiences.

Preceding Jack in death were his parents; brother, Raymond L. Jones; stepfather, Charles Earl Cain; and his beloved granny, Mattie Pendleton.

Jack is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret Andis Jones; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Debbie; grandchildren, Brianne and Andrea, all of Powell, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Martha of Chapel Hill, N.C.; brother-in-law and sister-in law, Alvin and Helen Greene of Bluff City; nephew, Greg Greene; and niece, Linda Chapman of Bluff City; and nieces, Elizabeth Jordan of Hampstead, N.C., Rebecca Weiss of Sanford, N.C., Rachel Pittman of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Nancy Jones of Redmond, Wash.
The family is most grateful for the loving care Jack received from the whole staff at the VA hospital, especially since his diagnosis of MDS in 2003. The kindness and compassion shown, not only to Jack, but also to his wife, are most appreciated.

The funeral service for Jack Edward Jones will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Appalachian Funeral Home-East Chapel with Mark Harris and Greg Greene officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the East Parlor of the funeral home. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn., with military honors accorded by the VFW Kingsport Post 3382 and the Tennessee National Guard.
