BILLINGS - Marie Louise "Mernie" (Hofmann) Pippin, 88, who was a Gray Lady for the Billings Deaconess Clinic for 42 years, died Saturday at her Mission Ridge home near Billings after a short illness. Her husband, Dutch, died just three days earlier. Cremation has taken place and a joint celebration of Dutch and Maries' lives will be held later this week.

A private interment will take place at Mountview Cemetery. Michelotti-Sawyers in Billings is in charge of arrangements.

"Mernie," as she was affectionately known by family and friends alike, was born to Fred and Pauline Hofmann on Jan. 10, 1914, in Billings. The eldest of three children, she graduated from Billings High School in 1931. Marie attended Eastern Montana College for one year before marrying Bernard "Dutch" Pippin on May 2, 1932. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary earlier this year with many friends and family members. Marie was preceded in passing by her husband, Dutch, three days before her on Nov. 6, 2002.

Marie was a member of First United Methodist Church, Billings Junior League, and Chapter S, P.E.O. She was a Gray Lady at Billings Deaconess Clinic for 42 years.

Marie is survived by a daughter, Ann Marie and Jerry Gibson of Palm Desert, Calif. a daughter, Kathy and Leonard Scott of Los Angeles, Calif. and a son, David Pippin and Sherrie of Great Falls. In addition, she is survived by six grandchildren, Suzanne Marie Colbo of Deer Lodge, Michael Williams of Hamilton, Lisa Marie Brydon of Lafayette, Calif., Mark Scott of Toluca Lake, Calif., Sarah Wells of Des Moines, Iowa, Brooke Summerfield of Lolo 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Edward "Bud" Hofmann, a sister, Clarice Brown, and an infant son, Tracy.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Sanctuary Fund, The Billings Junior League Endowment Fund or Big Sky Hospice.
