Mavis G. Brown
ABINGDON -- Mavis Gumm Brown, 83, a resident of the Green Spring Community near Abingdon, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at her residence. She was a native of Washington County, Va., who attended Virginia Intermont College and Emory & Henry College. She was a graduate of George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University with a bachelor of arts degree. She was a member of the Blacks Fort Chapter of the DAR and the Washington County Historical Society. She was a retired teacher with the Washington County Schools. She was a very active member of the Green Spring Presbyterian Church. 

She was a daughter of the late W.C. Gumm and the late Winifred Talbert Gumm Stickley. Survivors include: her husband, Aubrey E. Brown Sr. of Abingdon; two daughters, Dr. Mavis Hendricks Brown and Jennie Lou Brown, both of Richmond; a son, Aubrey E. Brown Jr. of Wilkesboro, N.C.; two half-brothers, Dr. George H. Gumm of Wise and James M. Gumm of Nashville; one grandson, Jackson Lee Brown of Wilkesboro; and several nieces and nephews. 

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Green Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Chapin officiating. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy may be in the form of memorial contributions to the Green Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 22007 Green Spring Church Road, Abingdon, VA 24211.
