Mrs. Maxie Sunshine Townsend, age 82, a resident of the Smith Creek Community of Washington County, Virginia passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at the Greendale Home.

She was born in Washington County, Virginia a daughter of the late Henry Newton Andis and Maggie Ellen Snodgrass Andis. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Luther Townsend; two sons, Walter M. Townsend and Kenneth F. Townsend; three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Doris Caldwell and husband, Bill of Rural Retreat, Va.; two sons, Dennis Townsend and wife, Betty of Youngstown, Fl. and David Allen Townsend and wife, Linda Sue of Bristol, Va.; one sister, Ethel White of Abingdon; two sister-in-laws, Lulu Church of Johnson City, Tenn. and Ruby Andis of Bristol, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Wilma Townsend of Bristol, Va.; ten grandchildren; four step grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to the Greendale Home and Naomi Barrett for the care that was given to Maxie.

Funeral services for Mrs. Maxie S. Townsend will be conducted Friday, May 22, 2009 at 11 A.M. in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Kenneth Widener officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be David Townsend, Todd Caldwell, Danny Townsend, Ty Caldwell, Derrick Caldwell and Randy Baldwin. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Townsend and Pat Kus. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Thursday evening at the Frost Funeral Home.
