FRANKTON Obee Hobbs, 71, died May 19, 2007, at his residence, following an extended illness.

He was born April 17, 1936, in Rose Hill, Va., the son of Ernest and Vennia (Saylor) Hobbs. He had resided in the Frankton area since 1955.

Obee had been a self-employed electrical contractor since 1964. He was currently semi-retired.
He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for more than 40 years. He had also worked for Johns-Manville, formerly of Alexandria; Anaconda Wire, formerly of Anderson; and State Plating, formerly of Elwood. He was currently working part-time at Northgate True-Value Hardware of Anderson.

In his earlier years, he played semi-pro baseball in the Delco-Remy Commercial league and was one of the few left-handed pitchers in the state. He had coached in the Shadyside Little League for several years. Obee and his wife taught round dancing in this area for the past 35 years. They also taught for the past 10 years in Bonita Springs, Fla. He was a member of the Indiana Square Dance Callers and Round Dancers. He also belonged to Roundalab, which is an international round dance organization. He was a member of Anderson Order of the Eastern Star 154; former member of the Delaware Masonic Lodge in Muncie and the Scottish Rite-Valley of Indianapolis; and a member of the Frankton Christian Church.

He enjoyed camping, traveling and had been active in the Hoosier Ramblers organization. He was a fan of NBA basketball and the Indiana Pacers. He also enjoyed NASCAR and driver Jeff Gordon.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn (Ashby) Hobbs of Frankton, whom he married Sept. 25, 1956; daughter, Brenda Carey of Summitville; two sons, Joel (Amy) Hobbs of Anderson and Rick (Ellen) Cook of Alexandria; 12 grandchildren, Joel Hobbs, Joshua Hobbs, Christopher Hobbs, Christy (Tim) Edwards, Beth (Michael) Thompson, Alex Cook, Bryan (Cindi) Carey, Rachel (Steve) Duckworth, Lori (Dan) Hushek, Abbey Carey, Sara Carey, Rebecca Carey; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joel (Sigrid) Hobbs of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Ernie (Gloria) Hobbs of Salem; three sisters, Marie Fultz-Dunedin, Florida, Ruby Boatwright of Marietta, Ga., and Lea (Ben) Gallagher of Hanover, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews and special friends. Also surviving is his special four-legged companion, "Harry".

Obee was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Freda Carroll.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Frankton Christian Church, 206 Church St., Frankton, officiated by the church pastor, the Rev. Al Covell. Interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery, Anderson.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church.
