Ray D. Hobbs, 77, Powhattan, died July 6, 2004, at a Rossville care center. He was born Sept. 7, 1926, near Powhattan, the son of Warren C. and Grovia Moore Hobbs. He graduated from Powhattan High School in 1945. 

Mr. Hobbs owned and operated several businesses, including Hobbs Construction Co. and Contract Rubber Processing. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and was honorably discharged in 1954. He married Ruby Phyllis Kinsley in August of 1954. They divorced in 1982. 

Survivors include two sons, Joel Hobbs and John Hobbs, both of Powhattan; two daughters, Janelle Amon and husband Skip, Topeka, and Jenalee Hobbs-Brown and husband Terry, Powhattan; a brother, Clyde Hobbs, Hood River, Ore.; three sisters, Ruth Bates, Waterford, Calif., Edith Johnson, Sabetha, and Ann Corley, Gladstone, Mo.; and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Hobbs; and two sisters, Elizabeth Filley and Geneva Hobbs, who died as a child. 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. July 10 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial with military honors will be in Powhattan Cemetery. Mr. Hobbs will lie in state until service time at the funeral home, where family and friends will meet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 9. Memorial contributions will be used for Powhattan City Park improvements and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
