Robert E. “Pete” Freeman

— Robert E. “Pete” Freeman, 71, of Reddick, Ill. and formerly of Terre Haute, died peacefully at his home with his loving family by his side on Saturday Nov. 17, 2007. 

He was born Oct. 7, 1936 in Terre Haute, the son of Aries Freeman and Edith Freeman. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

Survivors include his devoted daughter, Becky Smith and husband Dave of Reddick; his beloved granddaughters, Shannon Confiliano and husband Dan of Joliet, Ill. and Angela Morris and husband Mason of Reddick; great-grandchildren, Crista, Gina and Nicholas Confiliano, Jessica Skole, Katie Richards and his little fishing buddy, Riley Morris; his loving brother and sisters, Dr. Ronald Freeman and wife Sandra of Columbia, Mo., Rosalyn Martin and husband Larry of Bloomington and Patricia Schalburg and husband Jerry of Terre Haute; three nieces, Susan Rudd and husband Eric, Lesli Berry and husband Tommy and Judith Leslie Freeman; nephews, Randy Schalburg and wife Dina, Jeff Gaer, and Steve and Richard Smith; grandnephews and nieces, Charlie Rudd, Tom Henry Berry, Kyrk Freeman, Cory Schalburg, Harriette Freeman Katelyn Schalburg, Bre Wellman, Margaret, Ashley, Lindsay, Brian and Karen Smith. He is also survived by his caring and faithful friends, Harry Nelson and wife Freida, Malcome Roach and wife Ariene and Lois Pine; his mother-in-law, Lois Allen as well as other family members including stepsons, Richard Dayhuff and wife Tammy, Randy Dayhuff; stepgrandson, Derek Dayhuff; sisters-in-law, Cheryl Melchiorre and husband Jim and Pat Keach and brother-in-law, Jerry Allen. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma; both parents; a brother, James Freeman; a sister, Margaret Smith; great-grandson, Jayden Ryan David and cherished aunt and uncle, Bill and Fanny Wagle.
He was a 1954 graduate of Gerstmeyer Tech High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Union Christian Church and had previously been involved with the Riley Lions Club.
Fortunately, he was able to spend his last summer with his family in Illinois, making memories and doing the things he enjoyed doing such as fishing, boating, attending his great-grandchildren’s ballgames and even spending time out on the golf course, which he loved.


Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with Pastor Mark Grayless officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, with graveside military rites by Lawton-Byrum VFW Post 972. Memorials may be made to the local American Cancer Society, 705 Putnam St., Terre Haute, IN 47802.
