SAN ANGELO — Robert Perry Taylor passed from this world at home at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, after a brief illness. Robert was born on Dec. 30, 1910, in Rosston, Ark., to Jerry D. Taylor and Willie M. Taylor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters Nelle Shipley and Gladys Sherman.

Robert married Ruth Mears on Dec. 7, 1935, in Queen City, Texas. After living in several locations in the South, Oklahoma and New York, they moved to San Angelo in 1945 where he became a partner in Evans and Taylor Construction Company. After the retirement of his partner, Dale Evans, he formed Taylor Construction Company. Among the more notable construction projects with which he was involved are the San Angelo Coliseum, the sanctuary for the First Baptist Church, the original General Telephone office building and numerous others.

Robert was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church for over 60 years, and served as a deacon for much of that time. A big sports fan, he was given the Best Fan award by the San Angelo High School Athletic Association in 1958 and coached Little League baseball for many years. He was a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite and the local Masonic Lodge #570 for over 65 years. In addition, Mr. Taylor served as the Commander of the York Rite and was an active member up until two years ago.

He is survived by Ruth, his wife of 71 years; his son, Robert P. Taylor Jr. and his wife, Sarasue of Dallas; his daughter, Patsy Sloan and her husband, Jay of Bowling Green, Ky.; his sister, Francise Stanley of Houston; and his granddaughter, Perri Lynne Taylor of Dallas.

The family wishes to express special thanks to Dorothy McCormick, Kay Upton and June Waddell for the love and care they have provided to both Ruth and Robert over the past several months. Further thanks go to Buddy and Sylvia Peel, whose love and friendship have added immeasurably to Ruth’s and Robert’s lives.

Visitation was from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Johnson’s Funeral Home, with funeral service to be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Shotwell officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be John Barnes, Max Sanders, Jim Jones, Danny Welch, Mike Ellington and Tommy Newman, with honorary pallbearer James “Buddy” Peel. Additional honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Masonic Lodge # 570.
