Dr. Samuel R. Harmon, 82, passed away March 4, 2002, at Deaconess Hospital.
Sam was born on September 3, 1919, in Scottsburg, Ind. He was an optometrist for
38 years in downtown Evansville and a graduate of the Southern College of
Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army
Artillery in the European Theater of Operations. He was a member of Beta Sigma
Kappa International Honorary Fraternity and a life member of the American
Optometric Association.
He was a longtime member of the Twilight Optimist Club and one of the founders of the Evansville Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. He was actively involved in the Parent, Teacher, and Counselor organization at the Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis. Sam was also an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, Dorthy Andis Harmon; and his children, Arlene C. White of Carmel, Ind., Teresa J. Schmidt of Beech Grove, Ind., and Dr. Samuel A. Harmon of Noblesville, Ind. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. today at Pierre Funeral Home and from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday at Stewart Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Ind., where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Scottsburg Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana School
for the Deaf, 1200 E. 42nd Street, Indianapolis or the YWCA in Evansville.
