Ada L. (Bowman) Racey, 85, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018, at The Brethren
Home Community, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Larry
R. Racey Sr., her husband of 66 years.
Ada was born March 8, 1933, in Williston, N.D., the daughter of the late
William E. and Cora E. (Rhodes) Bowman. She was raised by Hershel and Evelyn
Callahan.
Ada was a 1951 graduate of New Oxford High School. She earned her associates
degree in early childhood education from Penn State, and her master’s degree
in health administration from York College. Ada was the health manager for
Head Start in York County for 38 years, and served on the boards of Safe
Kids of York County, the Dental Coalition of York County, and Aids Coalition
of York County. She wrote and presented a health and safety skit “Betty
Cracker’s Kitchen” to parents and community at local, state, and regional
meetings, and also presented at the National Head Start Conference in Puerto
Rico in 1986. She was a first aid and CPR instructor for the Red Cross for
31 years, and was a member of the Order of The Eastern Star, Conewago
Chapter #532.
In addition to her husband Larry, Ada is survived by three sons, Larry R.
Racey Jr. and his wife Lori of St. Mary’s, Georgia, and Gary E. Racey and
his wife Joyce, and Scott K. Racey and his wife Susan, all of New Oxford;
five grandchildren, Todd Racey and his wife Lisa, Carrie Fuhrman and her
husband Chad, Jennifer McConnell and her husband D. Colin, Kelly McWilliams
and her husband Branden, and Jill Varady-Pappas and her husband Andy; five
great-grandchildren, Carson Racey, Crew Racey, Tucker McConnell, Kennerly
McConnell, and Barrett McWilliams; a sister Alice Mae Hucko of San Diego,
Calif.; extra special friends, Betsy Gingrow and Opal Millhimes; and several
nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Samuel and Edward
Bowman; and a brother-in-law Joseph Hucko.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 30,
2018, at 11 a.m. at the Nicarry Meeting House of The Brethren Home
Community, 2990 Carlisle Pike, with Rev. Kirk Griffin officiating. A
visitation will be held at Nicarry on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of
the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNA/Hospice, 440
N. Madison St., Hanover, PA 17331; or to a charity of one’s choice.
Feiser Funeral Home Inc, 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, is in charge of
arrangements.
