Barbara Jean (Hobbs) Mumpower

Just wanted to let my family, friends, children, grandchildren, church family and Sunday School students know that I left this morning, Tuesday December 10, 2013 to spend Christmas in heaven with those present on the very first Christmas night. I will be joining mother Carrie Hobbs, daddy Garland Hobbs, stepmother and friend Ora Hobbs, brothers and sisters Kenneth Hobbs, Gaylord Hobbs, Juanita Rust and Mary Rock, very best friend Freeda Simcox, and a whole host of loved ones. What a joyous day this is for me!

I must leave behind my dear husband of 59 years, William “Cotton” Mumpower; he has taken such loving care of me during my illness; I love you! Also, my children, Jeff Mumpower and wife Sharon; Mike Mumpower and wife Lisa, Tracy Mumpower, and my grandchildren, Jeffry Mumpower and wife Julie, Lindsey Mumpower, Christian Mumpower; and my great-grandchildren Lucas and Logan Mumpower, will all treasure your acts of kindness. Having my baby sis Marcia Robertson with me these last few days has been such a comfort and blessing; thank you to her husband (Allen Robertson) for sharing her with me this week.

There are so many special brothers-and-sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins I’m leaving behind; just know you each brought me such joy, and I’ll look forward to our reunion in heaven. You’ll see me smiling and waving for you! I also give my love and thanks to my special caregivers, Sue Perry, Pat McGlocklin, hospices nurse Paula Reynolds, and all the hospices aides.

During my earthly 77 years, I celebrated quite a few special moments. Teaching Sunday School at Sugar Grove, Meadowview Presbyterian and Victory Baptist was such an honor; all those in my classes are still kindred spirits to me! I even became Bristol’s first female rural-mail carrier many years ago, when both my daddy (carrier for the Benhams, Rich Valley and Mendota routes) and his assistant (who happened to be my brother Gaylord) fell ill during the very busy and snowy Christmas 1964 season! However, of all the activities in life, I most treasured being a homemaker, wife, mother and seamstress. But, by far, the greatest joy was having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; and the hope of His soon return.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 P.M., Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Victory Baptist Church with Dr. Austin Cook and Rev. Ethan Cook officiating. The committal service and entombment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Friday in Mountain View Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel. Pallbearers will be Barry Rust, Henry Rust, Sam Rock, Kenny Hobbs, Jimmy Hobbs, David Robertson. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8pm, Thursday prior to the service at Victory Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice House at 280 Steele’s Road; Bristol, TN 37620. Akard Funeral Home, 1912 W. State St., Bristol, TN (423) 989-4800 is serving the Mumpower family.
