Bondford Cecil Holmes (1919-2006)
Bondford Cecil Holmes, Ponca City resident, went to be with his Lord on
Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 at Ponca City Medical Center. He was 87.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Freewill Baptist
Church. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park with the Rev. David
Bigger, pastor, officiating. Arrangements were made under the direction of
Trout Funeral Home and Crematory.
Bondford Cecil Holmes was born on Sept. 22, 1919 in Ponca City, the son of
Cecil and Annie Turner Holmes. He obtained his education in Ponca City and
was drafted into military service in 1941. Bondford honorably served his
country and was discharged in 1945 after attaining the rank of sergeant. He
served overseas in the Atlantic-Pacific Theater of Operations. He especially
enjoyed his service in Lowery Field in Colorado as a medic in Fitzsimmons
General Hospital.
On July 11, 1947 Bondford married Elsie Johnston in Newkirk. They remained
in Ponca City where they raised their family. Bondford began his career with
Conoco in 1940 as a Mechanical Laborer. After returning from his duty in the
military he began working in the Conoco control lab, where he spent six
years. Following those years he spent 16 years at the south plant; two years
as a Fireman; and in 1970 was promoted to the position of Shift Fire
Marshall. He retired in 1981.
Bondford loved spending time with his family. Some of his hobbies included
fishing, camping, dancing (to western swing music), watching old western
shows and movies, especially Gunsmoke. Bondford had a great sense of humor
and always loved a good joke.
He is survived by his wife Elsie, of the home; son, Danny Holmes and his
wife Jenny of Ponca City; son, Tim Holmes and his wife Kelly of Ponca City;
and one daughter, Cherri Harp and her husband Larry of Salem, Ore.;
grandchildren, Jennifer Holmes of North Glen, Colo., Michael Holmes of
Moscow Mills Mo., Randyl Holmes and Bryer Holmes of Ponca City, J.C. Harp
and Chris Harp of Salem, Ore., and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Cecil and Annie Holmes; four
brothers, Ed Holmes, Clint Holmes, Herschell Holmes and Sammy Lee Holmes;
and three sisters, Mildred Pruett, Georgia Pearl Silvers and Edna Mae
Holmes.
Casket bearers will be Phil Johnston, Michael Johnston, Steve Johnston, Dee
Johnston, Brian Johnston and Sonny Pruett.
Honorary casket bearers will be Michael Holmes, Bryer Holmes, Clarence
Marlar, Tony Marlar, Leonard Dennison, Bill Johnston and Jack Johnston and
his friends from the Conoco Refinery.
