Carol Elizabeth Hines passed away peacefully on April 25, 2011 in Moab, Utah, to be reunited with her eternal companion, Bill.

She was born on Oct. 7, 1913 in Moab to Howard Warren Balsley and Jessie Trout Balsley. She was the first of two children. She graduated from Grand County High School and attended nursing school in Oakland, Calif.

She married William Thomas Hines in Moab on Sept. 6, 1937. During their early married years they lived in Ephraim, Utah and Cedar City, Utah, where Bill worked for the U. S. Forest Service. They returned to Moab in 1942, prior to his service in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Carol has lived here for the past 70 years. She was a faithful and dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions of service in the Relief Society, Primary, Sunday School and MIA. She was active in civic organizations such as the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Literary Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Women’s Federation, Community Theater, 4-H Club and Boy Scouts.

Carol is preceded in death by her husband, Bill, who passed away in September 1991; her daughter, Virginia, who passed away in October 1967; her parents, Howard and Jessie Balsley; and her brother, Tom Balsley.

She is survived by eight of her nine adopted children, Bill (Beverly) Hines of Farmington Hills, Mich., Ron Hines of Kanab, Utah, Phil (LaRel) Hines of Wilmington, N.C., Wayne (Teresa) Hines of Moab, Art (Terri) Hines of Moab, Barbara Little of Moab, Doug Hines of Moab and Robert (Sandi) Hines of Moab. She has 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She is also preceded in death by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A viewing was held Wednesday, April 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kimmerle-Hefner Funeral Home. A viewing was also held on Thursday, April 28, at 10 a.m. prior to funeral services at 11 a.m. at the LDS 400 North Chapel in Moab.
