HAMPTON - Doris Fleenor Wilson died Jan. 12, 2011, at Sentara Careplex Hospital, Hampton.
Born April 14,1924, in Newport News, she was a graduate of the 1941 class of NNHS. Her career spanned more than 50 years with various health agencies, beginning with the American Heart Association in the late 50's. She rose to Executive Director of the American Cancer Society, responsible for about 1/3 of Virginia, then Associate Director of the March of Dimes. For the last 23 years, Doris was a consultant for AMC Cancer Research. For several years, she volunteered at Riverside Rehab Hospital in the gift shop, and as a tax practitioner with AARP.
She was a member and served on the vestry of Grace Episcopal Church in Newport News, until it's closing, and more recently a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Hampton.
Doris was preceded in death by husband, Martin Lewis Wilson; son, David F. Abbott; granddaughter, Tiffany K. Hatter; and brother, Edward N. Fleenor.
She is survived by son, Terence S. Abbott; daughter, Carolyn A. (David) Smith; sister, Marian 'Beth' Davis; grandson, David S. (Kerry) Abbott; and great-granddaughter, Abigail Jane Abbott; Sally Abbott and several nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews.
