Estel L. “E.L.” Gross, 87, Marysville, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Community Memorial Heathcare in Marysville.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 11, at Marysville City Cemetery.

The Rev. Joel Barber will officiate. Valerie Oltman will sing “On Eagles’ Wings” and “Amazing Grace.” Honorary pallbearers are Jerry E. Barnard, Jim Schramm, Tom Busing, Mike Slupianek, Jake Slupianek, Adam Slupianek, Tim Ackerman and Todd Ackerman. Military rites will be provided by the SMN&R Post of the American Legion, Marysville.

Estel Gross was born Dec. 22, 1922, at Beloit, the son of Vern and Reba Willmeth Gross. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1941.

He joined the Army in February 1943 and after training was stationed in the Pacific at Leyte, Philippines, and participated in the invasion of Okinawa. After the war he was stationed at Mindoro in the Philippines until he was sent back to the states on Dec. 22, 1945, and was discharged on Jan. 25, 1946.

He married Florence Faye Murdock on March 8, 1947. She preceded him in death in February 2005.

He worked at various jobs with farmers and in construction for two years until he went to work for Walter’s Conoco driving a gas delivery truck for Conoco and Westgate Derby Stations. In 1978 he went to work for the city of Marysville at the city water plant, retiring in 1990. After retirement he drove a pilot car for Landoll Corp., Marysville.

Survivors include his three daughters, Dixie Richter, Barnes, Vicky Sue Gross, Marysville, and Sherrie Busing, Marysville; his brother, Loren Gross, Henderson, Nev.; his sisters, Joan Galloway, Concord, Calif., and Ruby Bancher, Southgate, Calif.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Estel Gross Memorial Fund, to be designated later, and may be sent in care of Terry-Christie Funeral Home, Waterville.
