Ledyard - Gloria "Chic" Epes, 77, of Shewville Road, Ledyard, widow of the late Travis D. Epes, Sr., went home to God on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.
 
She was born Nov. 11, 1933 in Mendota, Va., the daughter of the late Marshall and Nannie (Barker) Stroup.
 
Mrs. Epes was a nurse for the former Norwich State Hospital for many years before her retirement in 1989.
 
She was an avid fan of college basketball, especially the UCONN women, she also enjoyed gardening, reading and her cat fluffy. She will be remembered for her adventurous nature and the love that she shared so freely with everyone she met.
 
She is survived by three children, Travis Epes and his wife, Donna, of Lisbon, John Epes of Vernon and Cherrie Phillips and her husband, Dan, of Newport News, Va.; her daughter-in-law, Helen Birkbeck of Vernon; her brother, Romi "Beau" Stroup of Bristol, Va.; a special nephew, William "Bill" Stroup of Pittsburg, Pa.; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and numerous extended family members and friends. A special thanks to Bella for her loving care over the past several months.
 
In addition to her loving husband, she was predeceased by two children, Janet and Dennis Epes; and six siblings.
 
Graveside Services will be observed 11 a.m. Saturday at the Avery-Stoddard Cemetery, Route 214, Gales Ferry. There are no calling hours.
 
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the , 306 Industrial Park Road, Ste. 105, Middletown, CT 06457 or to the charity of one's choice.
 
Care of arrangements has been entrusted to the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home of Colchester.
