Deceased Name: Helen Moore Applewhite: Applewhite, 102, busy with medical groups

Helen Moore Applewhite devoted her life to various medical auxiliaries in San Antonio and remained active through her 102nd birthday. "She was very civic-minded," said her grandson, the Rev. Robert D. Terhune, of Houston, who will officiate at her funeral Monday. "I think she was one of those people that takes an interest in civic organizations and makes it important in their lives." Applewhite died Friday in a local nursing home.

Born in 1889 in Seymore, Ind., Applewhite and Dr. Scott C. Applewhite were married in 1907. He died in 1945. The couple moved to San Antonio in 1910, and she became an active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. In the 1930s, Applewhite was president of the Bexar County Medical Society Auxiliary, the Texas Medical Association Auxiliary and was treasurer of the American Medical Association Medical Auxiliary. "She was a very forceful person," the grandson said. "She definitely wanted things done her way. That may have had something to do with her success." Applewhite also was a longtime member of the Children's Service Bureau. "She took her volunteer work like many people take their full-time jobs," the grandson said. "In her later years, she reminisced about things that were important in her life. These were the things that seemed to stand out." In the 1940s, Applewhite was an active member of the Battle of Flowers Association and the Military Civilian Club.

She also was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Association. "She led a very active, generous and rewarding life," the grandson said. "She took great pride in the contributions she was able to make to the city of San Antonio." Applewhite also is survived by a daughter, Josephine A. Terhune, of Hamden, Conn.; two other grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. The funeral is at 2 p.m. Monday in St. Mark's, with burial in Mission Burial Park South. Page: 12B
