Hugh Smeltzer Brummett, of Kingsport, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Washington County, Virginia to the late Clarence and Vergie Brummett.
 
He retired June 1992 after many years as a newspaper pressman. Hugh was known to many as "The Cake Man". He loved baking cakes for his friends and family.
 
Hugh was an active member of Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Brummett and two sisters.
 
Survivors include his daughters, Mickie Bensing and husband Dan; and Robin Burke; granddaughter, Kelly Whited and husband Joey; his pride and joy, great-grandson, Aidan Burke; and close friend, Shirley Phillips.
 
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will be held at 7 p.m. with Pastor Hobbie McCreary officiating.
 
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at East Lawn Memorial Park with military rites by the American Legion Posts #3/265. Family and friends will meet at the graveside at 9:45 a.m.
