MOSCOW -- The funeral for Irene Ruth Buckingham will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow. The Rev. Dave Hazel of the Moscow Church of the Nazarene will officiate.

Buckingham, a Moscow resident, died of cancer Monday at her home. She was 79.
She was born Oct. 26, 1918, to Ezra and Nettie Gross Scholfield at Barnes, Kan. The family later moved to Colorado and she graduated in 1938 from Trego Community High School at Keenesburg.

She and Harold F. Buckingham were married March 24, 1939, at Keenesburg. They moved to Moscow in 1940. She worked as a cook at the Army kitchen on the University of Idaho campus at Moscow and then at the Nobby Inn.

During the 1950s she was a cook at Wades Motel and Cafe, now the Mark IV. Later she worked as a meat wrapper at Safeway and was the custodian at McDonald Elementary School. She cleaned apartments for Otto Hill in her later years. At the time of her retirement she was the Goodwill representative in Moscow.

She liked to garden, can foods, fish and make quilts for her family and friends.
Her husband died in 1984.

Survivors include three daughters, Bernadean Yada of Moses Lake, Betty Teichmer of Moscow and Jackie (Cox) Tomsha of Spokane; a son, Bert Buckingham of Moscow; three sisters, Winona Harris of Ft. Lupton, Colo., Anna Lou Hergenreder of Greeley, Colo., and Anna Lee Miller of Platteville, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Three sisters and a grandchild died previously.
Viewing will be at the funeral chapel today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
