Obituary - John Dalton Henley

John D. Henley, 93, passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2010, in the Missouri Veterans Home at Mt. Vernon.

He was born April 20, 1917, and was the oldest of ten children. He is survived by two sisters and three brothers.
During World War II, he was with a hospital unit stationed in England and was overseas for five years. On his return, he attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and graduated with a degree in agriculture and science. He taught veterans agriculture for two years and then spent 27 years with the Missouri State Department of Transportation as a materials inspector. 

He married Helen McNeely on July 3, 1949, at First Baptist Church in Springfield, where he was a member. They made their home near Springfield on a farm, where he raised purebred Angus cattle for many years. During his retirement years he enjoyed rose gardening and won many ribbons.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Springfield; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Ed Dorris of Springfield, and Joy and Marc Lautenbach of Greenwich, Connecticut; grandchildren, Brian and Marta Duff, Matthew and Katie Duff; Thom, Anne, and Ellen Lautenbach; and Lauren and Michael Dorris; and great-granddaughter, Elsie Duff. 

Private burial will be at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield.
