John S. Toates, 60, died Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the Flandreau Medical Center. He was born December 10, 1948 at Flandreau to William and Edythe (Pickard) Toates. He graduated from Colman High School in 1967 and started farming northwest of Colman. John married Vera Dougherty on November 2, 1971 in Colman.

They moved to Piedmont in 1980 and then returned to Sioux Falls and he worked construction. John moved to Colman in 1991 and worked general construction and owned rental properties. John moved to Flandreau in 1995 and married Maridee Dailey on January 7, 1995. He was a member of the United Methodist Church where he served on various church boards, was chairman of the Moody County Republican Party, and was involved with Habitat for Humanity. John was a lifelong hunter and loved the outdoors.

John is survived by his wife, Maridee; five children, Tom Toates, Colman, Tanya (Chad) Mershon, Minneapolis, Michael (Jennifer) Toates, Colman, Joshua (Molly) Dailey, Rapid City, Lucas (Leah) Dailey, Flandreau; seven grandchildren: Caitlin, Mark, Sarah, Dannielle, Lars, Lurick, Lanz; his mother, Edythe, Nixa, MO; two brothers, Raymond (LaNell) Springfield, MO, Joseph (Georgianna) Greenville, SC; and four sisters, Lois (Rev. Joseph) Fahl, Nixa, MO, Helen (Jim) Adams, Strafford, MO, Betty (Rev. Paul) Powers, St. Johnsbury, VT and Phyllis (Rev. Dan) Smith, Vermontville, MI. He was preceded in death by his father, William.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday at the United Methodist Church, Flandreau, with burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Colman. Visitation begins at 4:00 pm Thursday at Skroch Funeral Chapel with a 7:00 pm prayer service.
