Joyce Irwina Curtis of Longview passed away Aug. 31, 2012, at the age of 97. 

She was born in Chehalis, March 8, 1915, to Frederick Gotlieph and Lura Helen (Nail) Schmit. 

Joyce married Cliff Mathews in Winlock Nov. 11, 1933. He was killed in the woods in July of 1942. On June 14, 1946, she married Gilbert Curtis. 

Joyce was a recorder for Trans American Title Co. She retired in 1977. Joyce and Gilbert lived on a small farm near Napavine, Wash., for 46 years, where they derived great pleasure from gardening. After his death March 3, 1994, Joyce moved to her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Don Franzen's farm in Longview where she lived in a small mobile unit until 2002 when she moved in to their home. In June 2009 she moved to Cedar Gardens Adult Family Home due to illness. 

Joyce was a member of Napavine Baptist Church for over 80 years, she was also a longtime member of Napavine PTA, serving in many roles including president. She also served on the Chehalis Eagles and Lewis County Elections Board. Joyce liked to play bingo, cards and casino machines. 

Joyce is survived by her children, Beverly Meyers of Modesto, Calif., Fred Mathews of Napavine, Karen Franzen of Longview, Chris Curtis of Olympia, and Ann Whitley of Napavine; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. 

A graveside service is planned for noon today at Napavine Cemetery.
