Laurmel James Buergey VIRGINIA BEACH - Laurmel James Buergey died at the age of 79 on Feb. 24, 2010 in Beaufort, S.C.

Laurmel was born in Commerce, Okla., where she met her husband of 42 years, retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. William L. Buergey, now deceased. She lived in Virginia Beach prior to moving near her family in Beaufort. Laurmel was a devoted mother who raised four children, Will, Charna (deceased), Chris and Steve, while also serving as an avid volunteer in the Tidewater community.

At various times Laurmel served as: president of the Virginia Musical Theater, president of the CINCLANT Officers Wives Club, and vice president of the church council at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She also worked countless hours as a volunteer at Luther Manor in Virginia Beach and served on the board of directors of Virginia Lutheran Homes. She also served on the Mayor's Commission on Aging in Virginia Beach. In addition to her volunteer activities, Laurmel worked as the admissions counselor at Marion Manor up until she suffered a severe stroke in 2002. 

Services will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1489 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010, followed by interment in the church's columbarium. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Caregivers Fund of Summit Place, 1119 Pickpocket Plantation Drive, Beaufort, SC, 29902 to benefit those who brought joy to Laurmel's life and took great care of her.
