Richard Allen Whitt

Richard A. Whitt of Terre Haute passed away Tuesday morning at Wyndmoor Senior Living.  He was 76.

Mr. Whitt served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, where he earned a Purple Heart and three bronze stars, serving as a sergeant.  After his honorable service, he worked construction, doing both residential and commercial carpentry as a master carpenter.  He was also a master organic gardener.  He attended school at Terre Haute until the 6th grade, when his family moved to Indianapolis and he graduated from Manual High School.

Born Dec. 29, 1941 in Terre Haute, he was the son of Alva Norman Whitt and Helen Lucille Connett Brown.  He married the former Marie Howell Feb. 2, 1980 in Terre Haute.  She survives.

Surviving family includes: wife, Marie Whitt of Terre Haute; son, Jeff Whitt; daughter, Tonya Pugh; step-children, Gerald P. Donovan, James E. Donovan, Tammy Elizabeth, Kimberly Gayle Marchand; several grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; three brothers, Russell Whitt, Ronnie Whitt, Philip Whitt; a sister, Karen Brown as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: a daughter, Teresa Marlow; two step-daughters, Bonnie Marie and Donna Morehead; a brother, Sonny Whitt; three sisters, Barbara Jean Whitt, Wanda McCloud and Mary Ann Burtner.


Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Burkhart Funeral Home, Crawfordsville.  Memorial services will be held in Terre Haute.  Burial with military rites will take place at a later date.
