Obituary - Richard Dawson Sipes
CMSGT. Richard “Gus” Dawson Sipes, age 87, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed
away Thursday, December 14, 2017, at his home.
He was the son of the late Harvey H. Sipes and Maude (Dawson) Sipes. He was
born on December 5, 1930, in Shoals, Indiana.
Richard graduated from Shoals High School in 1948 and immediately enlisted
in the United States Air Force. He served for five years and then joined the
Indiana Air National Guard. He served his country proudly and was part of
the 181st TAC Fighter GP, CAM division. He retired in 1988 after 37 years of
service. After retirement from the service, he worked for Lockheed Martin
and became a governmental consultant. Richard loved his family and enjoyed
their time together. He was happiest when he was traveling, camping,
vacationing with his family, attending NASCAR races, tinkering in the
garage, and hanging out with his cats.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta (Gibson) Sipes; five children, Myrna
Lynch and husband Jim, Lisa Holt and husband Ron, Rick Sipes and wife Lori,
Debra Sipes-Fears and husband Scott, and Brian Sipes and wife Shannon; 18
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Helen Benell, Mary Tucker,
Emile Carver, Albert Sipes, and June Smith.
A Celebration of Richard’s life was held on Tuesday, December 19th, at 1:00
p.m., at the Greiner Funeral Home, in Terre Haute, with visitation from
11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
He will be laid to rest at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, with military honors
presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 972.
