Obituary - Stanley Carr Smith Sr
Stanley Carr Smith, 88, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2012.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bernice Gordon Smith. Together they
raised five children, Susan Dews, of Jacksonville, Fla., Stanley Smith Jr.,
of Roanoke, Gordon Smith, of Jacksonville, Fla., Scott Smith, of
Fredericksburg, and Alice Nelson, of Lititz, Pa. He is also survived by a
sister, Charlotte Dean, of Roanoke; as well as 14 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren; and his church family at Washington Heights Grace
Brethren Church. Stanley was born in Wise County and lived his entire life
in southwest Virginia. A WWII veteran, he served in the 243rd Signal
Company. He worked at General Electric for over 25 years, retiring in 1986.
Upon retiring, he took up walking with his standard poodle; they were often
found sharing a morning biscuit at Hardee's. He also enjoyed sending time in
his workshop and working in his yard.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, August 4, 2012, at Lotz
Salem Chapel, with the Rev. Kevin Smith officiating. Interment will follow
in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour
prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the
Disabled American Veterans, 2383 Roanoke Blvd, Salem, Va. 24153.
