Stephen Lee Kegin - Fiery accident near Cashion claims man
CASHION - A Crescent man was killed Tuesday when his car left the highway and traveled nearly a quarter of a mile before crashing into a blackjack oak and catching fire.

Deer Creek Assistant Fire Chief Eric Harlow said the crash that killed Stephen Lee Kegin, 25, was possibly the worst wreck he's seen in more than 11 years working as a firefighter.

"We don't know if he fell asleep or swerved to miss a deer or if he had a medical condition," Harlow said.

Kegin died about 8:45 p.m. after he drove off State Highway 74 just north of Charter Oak Road in Logan County, said Capt. Chris West, Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesman.

Troopers on the scene reported that Kegin was southbound when his car left the road and went through a field before hitting the tree and bursting into flames.

"That's why we believe he fell asleep," West said.

When Deer Creek responders arrived at the scene, Harlow said, it appeared that another motorist, Dustin Payne, 25, had tried to help Kegin but couldn't save him.

"He didn't actually see it," Harlow said. "He came up shortly afterward and tried his best to get down to it but there was just nothing he could do."

Payne wasn't injured, Harlow said, but he was taken to the hospital because he was hyperventilating and having trouble breathing.
