Obituary - Steven Robert Brunes
Steven R. "Coach" Brunes, of Lebanon, Indiana passed away peacefully in
his home, January 2, 2020. Steve was born in Danville, Indiana at the
Hendricks Hospital in 1949. His parents, Robert and Lucille, raised him on
his grandmother’s farm on Old 52 in Whitestown. Steve attended Perry Central
School until his freshman year when Perry Central consolidated with Lebanon.
He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1967. Steve played basketball until
his sophomore year. He talked about being a basketball coach since he was 8
years old. He knew farm life wasn’t going to be a career for him. After high
school he attended Indiana State University and graduated with a bachelors
degree in English. He went on to get his masters degree and fulfill his
dream of being a basketball coach.
His career spanned 39 years in the state of Indiana with 500+ wins. He
started his coaching career at Mooresville High School as a freshman coach.
His first varsity coaching job was at Cowan High School where he won the
school’s first sectional title. His career took off and he had much success
at schools such as North Newton, Blackford, East Central, Brownsburg,
Castle, and Columbus East before retiring.
He is preceded in death by his wife Kathryn Brunes of Lizton, Indiana. He is
survived by his mother, Lucille, from Lebanon; brother, Randy (Sally) from
Indianapolis; son, Craig (Donna) and Craig’s two children Jaclyn and Alexis;
and daughter, Crista (Chad) and Crista’s five children, Blane, Laney,
Brolen, Leytan, and Brenner.
A Celebration of Coach Brunes' life will be held at 12 pm, January 11, 2020
in the David A. Hall Funeral Home in Pittsboro, where friends and family
will gather from 10 am until the time of the Life Celebration. All are
encouraged to arrive with memories ready to share. Burial will follow in the
K of P Cemetery, Lizton, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are encouraged to the Tri-West Dollars
for Scholars program.
