Walter D. Ferris, 87, of Grants Pass died April 21, 2006, at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at River Valley Community Church, with Bob Bonner and Dar Wolber, pastors, officiating. Chapel of the Valley-L.B. Hall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ferris was born July 14, 1918, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where he lived for 12 years. His family moved to Denver, where he graduated from high school. After moving to California, he married his wife Arlene, who died before him. He served as youth director at West Anaheim Baptist Church, Alhambra First Baptist Church and Ventura First Baptist Church. In 1975, he was ordained in the Christian ministry while serving at First Baptist Church in San Diego. He was minister of Christian education at Grants Pass First Baptist Church (now River Valley Community Church) and also led senior ministries. In 1984, he moved to Salem, where he served in senior ministries with Calvary Baptist Church. In 1990, he returned to Grants Pass, where he married his wife, Jeannette, who survives.

He was a charter member and past president of the Golden Eagles Kiwanis. He enjoyed golf.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a foster son, Steve Judd of Santa Margarita, Calif.; two stepsons, Greg Endeman of Colusa, Calif., and Curtis Endeman of Grants Pass; two stepdaughters, Julie Johnson of Shady Cove and Cathy Ritchie of Bismarck, N.D.; and six grandchildren.
