Obituary -John Erwin Fleenor Jr

John Fleenor Jr., 75, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born in Wise County, he was the son of the late John Erwin and Myrtle Peas Fleenor. He had been a resident of Grundy several years and was a member of Grundy Church of Christ.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Okinawa and receiving the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was a member and served as commander of the John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion, a former member of Sandy Valley Lodge 17 AF & AM of Grundy, Kazim Temple of Roanoke, Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Grundy and the Lions Club in Grundy.

He served as fire chief for the Grundy Fire Department, chairman of the Water and Sewage Commission and former town manager for the Town of Grundy. He served three terms as mayor of Grundy and signed the Historic Agreement in Cooperation with the Town of Grundy, the State of Virginia and the United States federal government on the flood proofing and redevelopment for Grundy. He was owner and operator of John's Flower Shop in Grundy.

Mr. Fleenor is survived by his wife, Lila Tomko Fleenor of Grundy; one daughter, Brenda Fleenor of Grundy; one son, John III and his wife, Barbara Raines Fleenor, of Grundy; one sister, Glenna Foster of Louisville, Ky; two brothers, Harold Fleenor of Louisville, Ky., and Jimmy Fleenor of Richmond, Ky.; and three grandchildren, Jordan Fleenor, Megan Rife and David Rife. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby Fleenor.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelists Charles Lees, Tom Cooper and Robin Sturgill officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va. Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Friday evening at 6 p.m. with services at 7 p.m.

Active pallbearers will be Jerry Davis, Ralph Cox, Edwin Bunn, Raymond Mays, Chuck Crabtree, Tony Davis, Barney Stiltner, Leslie Clevinger, Billy Raines and Jim Blevins. Honorary pallbearers will be David Salak, Roger Clevinger, Dr. Thomas McDonald, Robert Hale, Evangelist Clarence Greenleaf, Tom Holland, Dr. Clint Sutherland, Dr. William Lester, Paul Hatfield, Nathan Harper, Harold Trivett and Terry Trivett. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.
