Obituary - William Thomas "Bill" Garrett Sr
William T. Garrett Sr.
ABINGDON, Va. -- Mr. William Thomas (Bill) Garrett Sr., 65, died
Monday, March 26, 2001, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Abingdon. He was the son of the late
John Leonard and Eula Mae Garrett of Abingdon and was preceded in
death by a sister, Peggy Helton of Roanoke, Va. He was a U.S.
Marine, having served in the Korean War, and a member of the
Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975. He was a state of Virginia retired
employee. He was a life member of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire
Department with 34 years of active service and had been a
lieutenant for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lura Ellen (Sis) Wilson Garrett;
three sons, William Thomas (Bill) Garrett Jr. of Bristol, Va., Terry Lee
and wife, Sabrina Garrett, Glade Spring, Va., and John Leonard
Garrett, Abingdon; two daughters, Susan Elaine Garrett and husband
John Fern, Abingdon, and Sherry Lynne and husband Harold Weddle,
Meadowview, Va.; two brothers, Robert L. (Bobby) and wife, Wanda
Garrett, Abingdon, and Jack E. and wife, Jan Garrett, Abingdon; four
sisters, Phyllis and husband Harold Pippin, Hopewell, Va., Emily and
husband Butch Neal, Abingdon, Shirley M. Taylor, West Virginia, and
Betty and husband Johnny Camper, Abingdon; six grandchildren,
Jeremy Garrett, Tracy Garrett, Cody and Kelsey Weddle, and Seth
and Andy Garrett; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, March 29, 2001, at 11
a.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Leonard Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will
receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be John Crigger Sr., John Crigger Jr., Bob Howard, Dan
Mathews, Gerald Thompson, Lanny Osborne, John Fern and Tommy
Castle. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Abingdon
Volunteer Fire Department. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
may be made to the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Department, c//o John
McCormick, Treasurer, P.O. Box 1717, Abingdon, VA 24212-1717.
Farris Funeral Service is serving the family of Mr. Garrett.
