James Walter Andis

Civil War Pension No. 371,617

James W. Andis first applied for a pension in February 1886 at Webster Co., Missouri.  James filed an Affidavit of Claimant in which he states, "i rec'd my disability about September 1865 at little arkansas station while cutting meat for the company i cut and lost the use of a fore finger and cut middle finger the same time." He also states, "i have suffered from rhumatism and kidney disease a gradeal since 1870".  He received a pension of $2.00 per month.

On October 5, 1892, he applied for an increase in his pension in Port Townsend, Washington.  He underwent a full examination citing the disabilities of "Disease of lungs, Rheumatism, Disease of kidneys, and Injury of right index finger."  There is a slip in the file dated March 26, 1892 that states his disabilities do not meet the provisions of the Commissioner's order of February 9, 1892.  Again on December 1, 1893, another note appears reiterating that the claimant does not meet the disability requirements.  It is unclear as to whether James continued to receive his pension, however it is my belief he did based on the clerk's note contained in the widow's pension file.

 Calvania Andis

Widow's Pension No. 887,470

The first document that notes the pension due Calvania is the Skagit County Clerk's note to the pension agent in San Francisco, CA dated March 30, 1908.  He notes that James died on February 24, 1908 and should have received his quarterly pension March 4, 1908. It is unclear through the records I have in my possession whether she was getting the pension from 1908-1912.

In June 1912, there were a series of depositions to prove her claim as widow, and the examiners wrote a report dated 24 Jun 1912, recommending further examination of her legal claim.  There was at least one follow-up deposition with Harvey Thompson Andis, brother to James, dated January 29, 1913.  The last document obtained, dated March 5, 1913, notes that commencing March 17, 1908, Calvania would receive $8.00 per month, and from April 19, 1908 she would receive $12.00 per month for Callie.
