Miscellaneous Information

1) Pleasant enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Civil War and fought for the Union.  He entered the Army on 31 Oct 1861 at Keck's Church, Indiana (by Captain Keck), and was mustered 21 Nov 1861 (by Lt. Bickham).  Pleasant was in Company K, 49th Infantry from Indiana, and was killed during his time of service. He wrote many letters to his family while he was in the Civil War.  We have copies of several of them (click here to view military records and letters). Please also read "The Legend of the Holly Tree".

2) We cannot be certain as to the place of burial for Pleasant, but it is likely Paducah, Kentucky.  We do have a letter from the Indiana State Library referencing his possible stay in a St Louis, MO hospital, but it is not clear where he died or where he is buried in that letter. In a death notification letter to Pleasant's parents, it states he died at W.S. General Hospital #3 in Paducah.
