A Question Solomon Never Faced

By Donna O'Neal, Sentinel Tallahassee Bureau | September 3, 1992

Born without a brain, Emma Nicole Andis lived only five days, but the emotions her fleeting existence wrought will stay with her family for a lifetime. ''A brief life is not an insignificant life,'' her mother, Anne, said Wednesday. ''My child has taught me more about compassion, more about sympathy, and allowed me to love in spite of the hurt.'' Andis' daughter was born last February with anencephaly, a fatal condition in fetuses that prevents the brain from forming beyond its stem. Most afflicted infants live only a few hours or days.
