George E. Hancock

FAIRMOUNT — George E. Hancock, 93, well known Fairmount businessman and owner of the former George’s Gun Shop, passed away at 9:10 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2008 at his home.

George was born Feb. 18, 1915, in Homer to Fred and Effie Elliott Hancock. He married Georgia Turpin Sept. 30, 1940, in Louisville, Ky. She passed away Nov. 5, 2001.

Survivors include: one daughter, Diane (Irvin) Summers of Fairmount; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and Kathy Carlson of Champaign. George was preceded in death by his son, Fred and one sister, Margaret.

George was foreman of packing and shipping at Chanute Air Force Base for 30 years. He also owned and operated George’s Gun Shop in Fairmount from 1973 until his retirement in 2007. He served in World War II in the Army. He was a noted gun, coin, and knife collector and an avid Cubs fan. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He attended Faith Evangelical Methodist Church in Fairmount. George was a charter member of the Wabash Valley Gun Club, NRA and was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Catlin Masonic Lodge for 58 years, and Scottish Rite Valley of Danville, as well as a member of the Davis-Busby post of the Catlin American Legion. George also served for a time on the Fairmount Village Board.

Funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday at Robison Chapel in Catlin. Pastor Chuck Powell and Rev. Phil Jackson officiating. Burial with military honors by the Catlin American Legion will be in the Davis Cemetery, west of Fairmount. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Robison Chapel with Masonic rites at 6:45 p.m. Memorials in George’s memory to the Vermilion County Museum or Faith Evangelical Methodist Church in Fairmount, in care of Robison Chapel.
