HAGAN, GEORGIA MAE SOUTH
Mrs. Georgia Mae South Hagan of Bristol, Tenn., died Friday, Sept 21, 2001, in Wellmont Hospice House. Born in Johnson City, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. South.

Mrs. Hagan was a summa cum laude honor graduate of East Tennessee State University where she received her B. S. degree. Her M. A. degree was received from Vanderbilt-Peabody. Other advanced study was done at the University of Tennessee and University of Iowa. A teacher for over 40 years, she taught Latin and related subjects at Science Hill High School, Johnson City, and at Tennessee High, Bristol. Following retirement, she taught at Sullins Academy and at King College in Latin and E.S.O. Departments. She played a major role in the state organization of Junior Classical League. She traveled extensively in the states and Western Europe. Mrs. Hagan held membership in American Classical League, American Association of University Women, Johnson City, Monday Club Auxiliary and Gamma Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma for which she was serving as president when Alpha Alpha Chapter was organized in Bristol.

For over 50 years, she was an active member of the Bristol Chapter. She belonged to Women's History Club and served a presidential term in Greater Bristol Chapter AARP. Mrs. Hagan was a member of the Christian Church, E. Unaka Christian, in Johnson City, and Central Christian in Bristol. She was a leader in the Loyal Berean Sunday School Class and in women's church activities.

Survivors include her husband, Hugh Hagan; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Weaver and Mrs. Gladys Howard, both of Johnson City; niece, Mrs. Jan Haynie of Johnson City; and two nephews, Dr. Alfred C. Weaver of Charlottesville, Va., and Dr. William H. Howard III of San Antonio, Texas.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, in the Glenwood Mausoleum Chapel with ministers Dr. Ross Dampier, Jeff Noah and Niles Kitzmiller officiating. Entombment will be in the Glenwood Mausoleum. Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution may choose a charity of your choice or send contributions to the Central Christian Church, Melrose and Southside, Bristol, Tenn.

Any floral memorials will be used on the grave of Hugh Hagan's mother, Mrs. Curtis Jett Hagan, in the Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday in the Glenwood Mausoleum Chapel. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. BRISTOL HERALD COURIER Sept 23, 2001
