Obituary - Edgar Eugene Harris

Edgar E. "Gene" Harris, 86, residing in North Liberty, passed away at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 in his home.  He was born in Burns City, IN on March 3, 1925 to the late Harvey Alton and Cecil Elva (Miller) Harris.   On March 5, 1944 in South Bend, Gene married the former Martha Irene Salyer, who survives.  

Gene has lived in North Liberty most of his life.  He served his country honorably in the United States Army during WWII, occupying Japan as well as the Philippines. Gene retired in 1983 as an Inspector from Bendix Corporation after 43 years.  He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in South Bend and a lifetime member of the VFW in North Liberty. 

 In addition to his loving wife, Irene Harris of North Liberty, Gene is survived by one son, Ronald Harris of South Bend; six grandchildren, Brian Harris, Lynn (Jim) Fisher, Kim Harbaugh, Roger Harbaugh, Ethan Harris and Michael Harris; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Pearl Snyder of South Bend; and one brother, Walter Harris of Mishawaka.  He was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Jean Harbaugh; one grandson, Rodney Harris; and one sister, Helen Bridgewater.  

The Harris family would like to extend their appreciation to Jim Salyer and family for their kindness and care during Gene's illness.   Funeral services for Gene will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2011 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Lakeville Chapel, 314 S. Michigan Street, Lakeville.   Pastor David Bartley will officiate. Military graveside services and burial will follow at Porter Rae Cemetery in North Liberty. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 - 1100 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home prior to services.
