Obituary - Mary Dean (Allen) Snodgrass
Mary Dean Allen Snodgrass BRISTOL, Va.
Mary Dean Allen Snodgrass, age 100 years and eight months, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 15, 1912, at home in Bristol, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter E. and Beulah Dean Allen; her husband whom she married Dec. 4, 1935, Andis Lilburn Snodgrass; and sister, Marjorie Allen Smith. Mrs. Snodgrass attended Bristol TN High School, graduated Sullins College and attended Arlington Hall in Arlington, Va. She served 14 years as Alumni Director for Sullins College and 17 years as the Director of Visitation for State Street United Methodist Church. She was the oldest member of State Street United Methodist Church. She retired at age 83, after teaching Sunday School to all different ages for 35 years. She was a member of the Circle No. 1 of The United Methodist Women at State Street United Methodist Church for over 40 years and a former president of the United Methodist Women. Mary Dean served as one of two female members of the building committee for the current church building. She was a sustaining member of the Blue Stocking Club and the History Club. Mary Dean loved to travel, study ancient civilization, the history of art and enjoyed many hours of Mah Jonng with her friends.
Survivors include her son, Allen Andis Snodgrass and wife, Candice Altree Snodgrass of Bristol, Va.; two grandchildren, Jessica Weaver of St. Augustine, Fla., and Judd Jones and wife, Suzanne of Greenville, S.C.; three great-grandchildren, Chase, Madison and Morgan Weaver all of St. Augustine; and one nephew, Dean Lyle Smith and wife, Rita of Pawley's Island, S.C.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Bristol Health and Rehab and Dr. Belagode, the nurses and staff of 3West of Bristol Regional Medical Center. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 6, 2013, at State Street United Methodist Church Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Wright and the Rev. Mark Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Sodalis Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m., Thursday prior to the service in State Street United Methodist Church Parlor.
